Why a Thermal Storage Tank?

Thermal Storage Tanks are cylindrical stainless steel buffer tanks that store hot or cold water without mixing the two. Beltecno Japan’s proprietary simulation software sizes the internal distributor to your specific cooling load, not a standard catalogue size.

Role of TES Tank

Built for the Gap Before Backup Kicks In

The cooling device continuously circulates chilled water to keep the servers cool, while the buffer tank holds a reserve of cold water on standby, ready to take over at any moment.

If a power failure occurs, the system switches to backup power — but that switchover takes about 10 minutes to complete. During that gap, it’s the buffer tank that keeps cold water flowing to the equipment, so cooling never actually stops.

Sized to the switchover, not a guess

The buffer tank’s capacity is calculated directly from your backup power’s switchover time, so it never runs dry before normal cooling resumes.

Push-Flow

Inside a Push-Flow Cycle

High-temperature water entering the tank spreads across the full cross-section near the inlet, then advances toward the outlet without mixing with the cooler water below it. This flow condition — a perfect push-flow — is what lets the tank keep discharging genuinely cold water for as long as possible, instead of a gradually-warming blend.

Performance

What Makes a Buffer Tank Perform?

For the same tank size and flow rate, the longer a tank keeps delivering cold water at the outlet, the better it performs. What decides that duration is the distributor installed on the inlet side.

Longest cold-water supply

Perfect push-flow

Hot water spreads across the full cross-section at the inlet and advances toward the outlet as a sharp layer — never mixing with the cold water below.

Shorter cold-water supply

Short-circuit flow

Incoming hot water shoots straight through to the outlet, blending with the cold water and cutting the supply time short.

The Distributor

Turning a Fast Jet into a Slow, Even Front

The key to forming a push-flow is converting the small-diameter, high-speed flow from the inlet pipe into a large-diameter, low-speed flow across the whole tank.

That conversion is exactly what the distributor does — and every Beltecno distributor is engineered around this principle.

Simulation Results

See the Difference a Distributor Makes

Temperature-analysis simulations of the same tank, with and without internal provisions. Red is incoming hot water; blue is stored cold water.

Temperature simulation without provisions: hot water flows straight down to the outlet

Short-circuit

Without provisions

Incoming hot water flows directly toward the outlet, so cold water can only be held for a short time.

Temperature simulation with distributors: hot water forms a layer that pushes downward

Push-flow

With distributors at inlet & outlet

An extrusion (push) flow forms, keeping cold water at the outlet for a much longer period.

How It Works

Inside Beltecno’s Multi-Stage Distributor

01

Stacked circular plates

Cross-section of stacked distributor plates under the mirror plate

Circular plates of different diameters are stacked at regular intervals, each with a progressively smaller central hole. Hole sizes are tuned so the flow velocity is nearly the same at every stage outlet.

02

Radial slowdown

Top view: flow is fast at the centre and slows toward the plate edges

Within each stage, water moves fastest at the centre and decelerates as it spreads outward, leaving the plate edge as an even, low-speed flow.

03

Uniform low-speed outflow

Small high-speed pipe flow becomes a wide low-speed flow at each stage outlet

The small-area, high-speed flow in the pipe becomes a large-area, uniform low-speed flow at the outlet of every stage — the condition push-flow needs.

Simulation-Based Design

Designed by Simulation, Not Guesswork

Using our temperature-analysis software, we simulate the flow inside your buffer tank and design the distributor that best suits your operating conditions — so you can see how the flow forms and how long cold water will last before anything is fabricated.

To run your simulation, we need:

01

Tank capacity

Volume and dimensions

02

Flow rate

Design inflow / outflow

03

Temperature conditions

Supply and return temperatures

04

Pipe positions

Inlet and outlet locations

Because we also design and manufacture the tank itself, we take you from simulation to an installed tank.

FAQ'S

Frequently Asked Questions

Thermal storage tanks are cylindrical storage tanks purpose-built with internal distributor plates for perfect push-flow, so hot and cold water stay separated — a role standard storage tanks and modular panel tanks aren’t designed for.

Cylindrical thermal storage tanks are available up to 100 KL, sized to your cooling load and failover window based on simulation.

Yes. Glass-wool or PUF insulation can be applied to minimise thermal radiation, helping the tank hold as little as 1.8°C of drift over 24 hours.

Yes. Customers can request internal heat transfer tubes (heating coils) fitted inside the tank to produce hot water.

Most commonly data centres and semiconductor plants, alongside industrial manufacturing, healthcare, and any facility running a chilled- or hot-water circuit that can’t tolerate a temperature gap.

They’re pre-fabricated and quality-checked at the factory, including a leak/air-blow and water-hold test, before shipping — roughly 3x faster to deploy than a concrete tank built and cured on site.
